Wellspring Parenting

Tom was feeling preoccupied while at work on Monday, as over the weekend he had an argument with his 16-year-old daughter and was not feeling happy about how he handled it. Tom and his wife had been having some ongoing problems with their daughter staying out past curfew, and the prior weekend was no exception when she came in at 3:00am, causing conflict. During the argument, Tom had become escalated when his daughter was not responsive to his questions about her whereabouts, swearing at her and raising his voice, which seemed to cause his daughter to shut down even further. Both Tom and his wife had at times felt at a loss for how to set limits with their daughter, as she seemed to continue staying out later than she was supposed to regardless of any punishments they had attempted to enact with her. Tom kept playing and re-playing the argument over and over in his head, cringing when he remembered his choice of angry words and behavior- things had never gotten this escalated for him before with his family and he felt remorseful and sad about the state of things.

Tom remembered about the EAP program while he was at lunch, seeing the poster on the wall in his employee lounge. When he returned to his office, he went onto the EAP website and read some articles about parenting teenagers that gave him some ideas for ways to approach the situation with his daughter the next time. He also sent an email via the website requesting a referral to a parenting coach. The EAP counselor called Tom back and got some additional information about locations and times that would work well for himself and his wife, and provided a referral to a therapist who specialized in parenting issues, children and adolescents. When Tom got home from work, he shared the articles that he had read to his wife, and they arranged a time to meet with the counselor he was referred to. After having a few sessions with the counselor, Tom and his wife were able to get some support and learn some strategies for communicating with their daughter in a way she was more receptive to, allowing them to have increased harmony within their family.
